How to read a California cannabis label

Universal symbol, total THC, batch number, lab testing. What's on a legal California edible label and what it tells you.

Every legal cannabis edible sold in California carries a label packed with required information. Once you know what to look for, it tells you a lot.

The universal symbol

A red triangle with a cannabis leaf and an exclamation point. It marks the product as containing THC, and it has to be on the package.

THC and other cannabinoids

Labels list THC per serving and per package. For an edible, you’ll see the milligrams per serving (10mg max in California) and the package total (100mg max). Many products, including GURU, also list the other cannabinoids.

Batch number and testing

Every batch of legal cannabis in California is tested by a state-licensed lab for potency and contaminants before it can be sold. The batch number on the label ties your package to those results.

Licenses

The label includes the license number of the manufacturer. You can look up any California cannabis license on the Department of Cannabis Control’s public license search.

Warnings

You’ll see the California government warning, a Proposition 65 notice, and, for edibles, a warning that effects may be delayed by two hours or more. They’re required, and they’re worth reading.

Where it came from

Legal products are sold only through licensed retailers and delivery services. If a product doesn’t have these elements, it didn’t come through California’s legal market.
